TheSkimm Co-founders Host ‘Bevel, Books and Bourbon’ Book Club Event to Discuss “How to Skimm Your Life”
Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg lead virtual discussion on May 4th as part of Bevel’s quarterly members-only virtual book series
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Bevel, a top strategic communications consultancy firm known for guiding category-leading clients in finance, tech and venture capital, has announced their Spring book event as part of ‘Bevel, Books and Bourbon.’ The conversation will feature renowned entrepreneurs and co-founders of theSkimm, Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg, authors of No. 1 New York Times Bestseller: “How to Skimm Your Life.”
The book is the product of theSkimm, a digital media company targeting millennial women. After being producers for NBC News in Washington, D.C, theSkimm co-founders, Carly and Danielle, found themselves in New York City as roommates with the goal to make it in the media industry. They launched theSkimm in 2012 from their couch and today, they reach over 7 million subscribers and millions more across platforms, nationwide.
“For years now we’ve been answering people’s questions on what has been going on in the world,” said theSkimm co-founder Danielle Weisberg. “The more that we got to know our audience, and the more that we got to grow up with them, we realized that what was really needed was a reference book on how to grow up.”
In an effort to encapsulate the engaging and easily digestible tips that make up theSkimm brand, the two founders published “How to Skimm Your Life” in 2019. Covering everything from personal finance, to career, to stress management, global politics, and more, the book breaks down some of the less glamorous parts of entering the adult world. Since making its debut on the New York Times Bestseller List, “How to Skimm Your Life” has provided readers with the information needed to make informed and empowered decisions in their lives long-term.
“I think what this book really highlighted for us was that it answered our own questions, and I think for both of us there are two areas where we felt we weren’t as personally confident,” said co-founder Carly Zakin. “One was around personal finance, the other was around health insurance. The book really tackles all the terms you need to know and how to read through things like that.”
Since launching in April 2020 at the height of the global pandemic, Bevel’s quarterly book club, ‘Bevel, Books & Bourbon,’ has attracted over 500 CEOs, founders and entrepreneurs across industries. Bevel’s books are carefully curated from recommendations of leading VC investors and startup founders. The book club series aims to open up engaging conversations around the most interesting people, ideas, and companies.
“When I started Bevel in 2017, I was one of the few women going after fintech and venture capital,” said Bevel CEO and founder, Jessica Schaefer. “‘How to Skimm Your Life’ is the book I wish I had in my early twenties when I was just starting out my career and figuring out how to launch my own business. We are so excited to have Carly and Danielle joining our book club and create a conversion that aims to inspire the next generation of young female leaders.”
Bevel was founded nearly four years ago by Schaefer, an industry veteran who drew on her experience as Vice President of Corporate Communications at Point72 and its venture capital arm, Point72 Ventures, to launch the first quantitatively driven, results-oriented public relations firm. The accountable and VC-like approach has led the firm to attract a notable roster of clients, including: Acorns, Greycroft, Primetime Partners, Public.com, Rally, RX3 Ventures, Torch Capital, Upholdings, and Yieldstreet. Bevel has an extensive waitlist and is only accepting highly-vetted new business opportunities.
