MoneyGram appoints former Walmart EVP Anthony Soohoo as new CEO
US-based paytech MoneyGram International has named former Walmart exec Anthony Soohoo as its new CEO, effective immediately.
Soohoo takes the reigns from Alex Holmes, who has acted as MoneyGram’s CEO and chairman since January 2016. MoneyGram says Holmes will remain an advisor to the Board of Directors to ensure a “smooth transition”.
In his new position, Soohoo will focus on strengthening the company’s global partner network and executing MoneyGram’s digital innovation strategy.
Soohoo brings over 30 years of experience working in the technology, AI, and business sectors, with MoneyGram saying it aims to tap into his “deep expertise leading digital transformations that enhance growth strategies”.
Before joining MoneyGram, Soohoo served as EVP for Walmart’s Home Division for three years. He also previously founded AI-powered online shopping service Dot & Bo, has held VP roles at CBS and Yahoo, and has served on multiple fintech boards.
MoneyGram, which specialises in money transfers and cross-border P2P payments, has welcomed several new executives over the past 12 months.
In June, Gary Ferrera was appointed as chief financial officer, while Edwina Johnson took on the role of general manager for MoneyGram Online International last November. Most recently, in August, Josh Gordon-Blake joined the team as chief digital officer.
