Ignacio Juliá leaves ING to become Santander Spain CEO
Banco Santander has hired former ING chief Ignacio Juliá to replace Ángel Rivera as the new CEO of Santander Spain.
Rivera, who has led the regional division for the past two years, will step down on 1 October to “develop his career in other areas of the business world”, but will continue to support the leadership transition until the end of the year.
His successor joins the bank directly from a two-decade career at ING, where he has been serving as CEO of Spain and Portugal since 2021.
Juliá also previously held the roles of chief financial and risk officer, and head of retail for ING, which upon announcing his departure, confirmed that Almudena Román, its current new business development, brand and ESG lead, will assume the position until a permanent replace is found.
As CEO of Santander Spain, Juliá will be expected to “help progress in transforming the business model to provide better customer service and, at the same time, generate further growth and efficiency”, according to a statement by the bank.
Speaking on the appointment, Ana Botín, executive chair of Banco Santander, describes Juliá as “a young professional, with great experience in transformation projects similar to our own”, who will “help us accelerate the implementation of global platforms and boost the growth of Santander Spain”.
