Triodos Bank UK, the UK arm of Netherlands-based Triodos Bank, has named financial services veteran Mark Clayton as its new chief operating officer (COO).

In his new position, Clayton has been tasked with managing large project implementation, facilities management, ICT services, and customer operations at the bank.
Clayton has spent much of his career at HSBC, where he worked for 23 years. During his tenure at the bank, he held several senior leadership roles, including acting as the company’s head of premier distribution.
Reflecting on his career path, Clayton explains he “transitioned away from the mainstream banking sector a few years ago”, most recently serving as COO at Birmingham-based Unity Trust Bank, where he says he found “fulfilment in roles where values steer decision-making”.
Founded in 1980, Triodos Bank provides sustainable banking services with the aim to promote “responsible and transparent banking”. It currently operates in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and the UK.
The bank says it finances “companies, institutions and projects that add cultural value and benefit people and the environment, with the support of depositors and investors who want to encourage corporate social responsibility and a sustainable society”.
The bank has been operating in the UK since 1995, initially under a passporting regime made possible by EU agreements, before the bank applied for and received a separate banking licence for its UK operations in 2019 in preparation for Brexit.
Speaking on the company’s new appointment, Triodos Bank CEO Becis Watts states that Clayton brings a strong “understanding of this business, our customers and the opportunities for growth”, and is “confident that Mark’s knowledge will be instrumental for our success in the rapidly changing banking landscape”.
