Western Union Expands Services to Walgreens, Duane Reade Stores (Oct. 6, 2014)
More than 7,500 Walgreens and Duane Reade drugstores throughout the U.S. now offer Western Union domestic and international money transfers through touchscreen kiosks that are part of the Walgreens Balance Financial platform.
“Customers trust us to move their money around the globe and in return are expecting customized treatment and recognition,” Carter Hunt, Western Union senior vice president and general manager, U.S., tells Paybefore. “We’re listening to them and have raised the bar … offering self-service experience with built in compliance capabilities.”
Customers can enroll in the MYWU membership program at the kiosk. Money senders can pay with cash or a PIN-based debit card, including prepaid cards. In early 2015 Western Union plans to roll out bill pay and prepaid card reload capabilities via the kiosks, Hunt adds.
A year ago, Walgreens, in conjunction with Galileo, launched the Balance Financial Prepaid MasterCard program. The Balance Financial program ties Walgreens Balance Rewards loyalty program with the benefits of a prepaid card. Galileo serves as the program manager and processor for the Balance Financial program and The Bancorp is the card issuer.
