Android Pay to launch in Canada
Android Pay is set to launch in Canada on 31 May, according to sources that gave news site MobileSyrup internal documents.
MobileSyrup says there are still a number of questions that need to be answered regarding the payment service, “including specific bank partners and how setting up the payment platform with a Canadian debit and credit cards will work”.
It is understood Android Pay will work with all major credit and debit cards in Canada. It will work with any NFC-compatible devices running Android KitKat 4.4 and above.
There will be the customary competition as Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are both already in Canada. The former arrived in 2015, while the latter launched last year.
Android Pay has been very active around the world.
As Banking Technology reported on 23 May, Android Pay landed in Russia and can be used with an eligible Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card from a supported bank.
In March, Android Pay arrived in Belgium. Last year, Android Pay went live in Poland – the first country on continental Europe to launch the service.
The US was the first country to get Android Pay – this was in May 2015. The UK followed a year later. In Asia, Android Pay is available in Singapore and Hong Kong. It is also up and running in Australia, with ANZ being the first bank to introduce it to the market in July.
