Smart has been with the company since 2016, joining as one of Monzo’s first 20 employees and starting as a senior iOS engineer.
Over the years, he has held several leadership positions at the bank, including director of engineering, interim CTO, and the company’s first VP of engineering. In this role, he was responsible for a team of over 200 engineers and managers, overseeing products such as borrowing, payments, personal banking, and business banking subscriptions.
Since August 2022, Smart has served as general manager of wealth, where he led the creation of various instant access savings and investment products, along with the launch of the firm’s pension offering, Monzo Pensions.
Smart’s promotion to CPO comes amid a period of “rapid development” at the bank, according to Monzo. In addition to its new pension proposition, the company recently introduced Monzo for Under 16s, a free bank account for children aged six to 15 with parental controls.
Last month, COO Sujata Bhatia announced her decision to step down from her role after five years with the company.
