Bankwell names veteran Brian Merritt as new CTO
Founded in 2002, Bankwell operates as a commercial bank with over $3 billion in assets, offering a wide array of business and personal checking accounts, loans, lines of credit, CDs, and a digital high-yield savings account.
Its commercial services include specialised lending for real estate, healthcare and insurance agencies, alongside treasury management and deposit solutions.
Merritt brings over 30 years of experience to Bankwell, having previously served as CEO of online business bank Seed.
He then moved over to SVP and head of product at Cross River, through the bank’s acquisition of Seed in 2019.
Prior to this, Merritt served as VP of engineering at neobank Simple, where it’s said he scaled the engineering team to over 30 members and played a key role in growing the customer base to over 100,000 during his three-year tenure.
Christopher Gruseke, president and CEO of Bankwell, says the group plans to leverage this experience to “enhance our technology infrastructure”.
