Bhatia, who took over from Tom Foster-Carter in 2020, reflected on her decision, stating: “There’s never a good time to leave a company that’s on a tear and has some of the best and smartest people driving it forward, but in many ways, that’s exactly why it feels like the right time.”
The outgoing COO listed some of the company’s achievements during her tenure, including growing its customer base from three million to 11 million, boosting annual revenues from £60 million to £1 billion, and achieving profitability.
Before joining Monzo, Bhatia spent nearly 16 years at American Express, holding various senior leadership roles, such as head of European acquisition, loyalty and engagement, and SVP of global strategy and capabilities, before ending her time at the credit card titan as SVP for global merchant services in Europe.
Away from her day-to-day work, Bhatia sits on the board of the UK’s National Theatre, and has participated in various funding rounds as an angel, notably during Indonesian fractional investing app Pluang’s $55 million Series B in 2021.
On her future plans, Bhatia said: “I’m not ready to talk about next steps just yet, but I will share them when I’m able.”
Monzo, valued at $5.9 billion after a secondary share sale in October, recently bolstered its executive team by appointing Mark Newbery as UK CFO and Tom Oldham as Group CFO.
