Vipps MobilePay launches Tap with Vipps in Norway as “world’s first alternative to Apple Pay on iPhone”
Vipps MobilePay, a Nordic mobile wallet formed through the 2022 merger of Norway’s Vipps and MobilePay in Denmark, has launched Tap with Vipps in Norway, billed as “the world’s first alternative to Apple Pay on iPhone”.
Tap with Vipps can be used “for all types of payments”, the company says, including in-store payments, peer-to-peer transfers, and bill payments.
To be available on both Apple and Android operating systems, the mobile solution will work with all card terminals that accept BankAxept cards. BankAxept is Norway’s national payment system, launched in 1991.
“Customers of SpareBank 1, DNB, and over 40 other local banks will be the first who can tap with Vipps. Vipps are working to include more banks,” the company says.
Vipps MobilePay intends to roll out the solution in neighbouring Denmark, Finland and Sweden next year.
“In a few months, and well before the summer vacation, the service will also be available for Visa and Mastercard cards, making it possible to tap to pay with Vipps worldwide,” the company adds.
The launch comes after an agreement between the European Commission and US tech giant Apple was finalised in July which saw Apple open up access to ‘tap and go’ technology on iPhones.
Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay, says: “After Apple opened up, it has been important for us to launch as quickly as possible, to meet tough competition. However, we will continuously add more simplifications, international cards, and more banks.”
