Wealthsimple launches in-app travel eSIM powered by Gigs
Online robo-advisory and stock trading platform Wealthsimple has unveiled a new global travel eSIM offering in Canada in collaboration with Telecom-as-a-Service (TaaS) provider Gigs.
The offering has joined the platform’s new lifestyle rewards programme and is now available to clients with assets over $200,000.
Installed directly through the Wealthsimple app, the travel eSIM supports connectivity with over 140 countries and can be used alongside a primary physical SIM or eSIM to eliminate roaming fees.
There is a 10GB travel eSIM option being made available for Wealthsimple’s Premium and Generation clients.
The functionality is powered by Gigs’ TaaS, which businesses can use to merge branded mobile plans into their core offerings, without a direct integration with a carrier.
Gigs, which appointed former Stripe executive Rishi Sachdeva to head of fintech in April, has previously extended this capability to several financial institutions looking to tap the 440% increase in eSIM adoption expected over the next five years.
This includes Indian neobank Zolve, which collaborated with Gigs in August last year to launch a mobile service for expats living in the US.
In a statement, Dennis Bauer, co-founder and president of Gigs, cites Wealthsimple as the first wealthtech platform in Canada to add a Gigs-powered travel eSIM to its offering, with the partnership set to be extended “in the months ahead”.
