Bradwin Roper to step down as fintech CEO of MTN South Africa
Mobile network operator MTN South Africa has announced that Bradwin Roper is to step down as CEO of its fintech division to “explore a new opportunity”, effective October 2024.
In a statement confirming Roper’s intended departure after a year at the company, MTN South Africa attributes the division’s “solid innovation and expansion” to Roper’s leadership, with CEO Charles Molapisi stating that the regional division will seek to “continue advancing fintech innovation in South Africa”.
MTN South Africa says it has begun its search for a successor to Roper, with the appointment to be announced “in due course”.
Aligning with an increasing trend among African telecommunication providers, MTN South Africa’s expansion into fintech has so far been evidenced through its launch of app-based business payment capabilities, virtual wallets and international remittance services in September last year.
This was followed by the wider MTN Group – which services a subscriber base of 290 million with 60 million active monthly mobile money users in Africa – tapping its partnership with payments giant Mastercard in February to expand the presence of its SME payment acceptance solutions, MoMo wallet offering and remittance services across 13 markets.
Mastercard signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to buy a minority stake in MTN Group’s fintech business last year.
