African fintech Union54 launches new social commerce platform ChitChat
Zambia-based fintech Union54 has launched a new social commerce app called ChitChat, Africa’s first secure chat platform with integrated digital wallet features.
ChitChat, which was developed in partnership with global payments giant Mastercard, allows users across Africa to chat via an encrypted platform and transfer money to each other through its digital wallet features.
Union54, a pan-African digital solutions provider and debit card issuer, says that the new app will allow for immediate USD payment transfers directly within chat conversations.
In addition, the platform will provide the added convenience of in-app currency conversion between USD and Zambian Kwacha (ZMW).
Perseus Mlambo, CEO of Union54, says that ChitChat’s founding principles are to be a “safe, secure, and sovereign platform for social commerce”.
“We aim to grow ChitChat into a platform that accelerates commerce across Africa,” Mlambo adds.
Union54 has plans to quickly build out the features of the app, with plans to roll out group wallets over the coming weeks. By Q2 of this year, the firm projects it will also be able to offer users USD debit cards.
