Joy Cheng named as new head of Citi Commercial Bank in Hong Kong
Citi has announced industry veteran Joy Cheng as the new lead of its commercial banking division in Hong Kong.
Effective 1 February, Cheng succeeds Anson Kwok as head of Citi Commercial Bank (CCB) Hong Kong, following Kwok’s retirement at the beginning of this year.
Described as “an integral part of Citi’s global strategy and a key engine for growth”, CCB will seek to further its business growth and financial performance under Cheng’s remit, with a particular focus on tapping “emerging opportunities” in China’s Greater Bay Area.
The unit’s current reach pertains to cash and liquidity management products and foreign exchange, trade finance, capital market and lending solutions, among others, for mid-sized corporates in a total of 11 markets across Asia, including mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Cheng is expected to leverage over 30 years of experience in banking to satisfy the demands of the role. She made her industry debut with Citi back in 1993, joining first as a relationships manager, before rising through the ranks to serve several senior roles, including head of financial institutions for Hong Kong and head of Asia Pacific multinational coverage for the financial institutions group.
Since 2019, she has served as Citi’s head of corporate banking for Hong Kong, leading the management of its corporate, public sector, multinational and other institutional clients.
“We are well-positioned to support Greater Bay Area companies with cross-border banking needs, helping them enter new markets and expand internationally,” comments Aveline San, CEO and head of banking for Citi Hong Kong and Macau. “Joy’s strong background in corporate banking will be invaluable as we support commercial bank clients on the next phase of their growth journeys.”
