Long-serving Barclays exec Matthew Haines leaves for Santander
Matthew Haines has brought to an end his nearly two-decade-long tenure at British high street bank Barclays to take on the position of product owner at Santander UK.
Taking to LinkedIn to confirm his departure from Barclays, Haines describes his term at the bank as “quite the journey”. He most recently served as head of product and partnerships – tokenisation, mobile and new payments since October 2019.
In this role, Haines worked on the development of the bank’s API-based token management service, the delivery of its UK payments strategy, and within its exploration of open banking and commercial variable recurring payments, among other areas of focus.
Prior to this remit, he held a number of leadership positions at the bank including senior product and proposition manager and debit card product manager, as well as contactless business manager at its credit card division Barclaycard – a role which saw his team implement contactless capabilities across London’s transport network.
“I am filled with gratitude for the incredible colleagues and leaders who have supported me throughout this journey,” writes Haines. “Each milestone was shaped by the collaboration and mentorship of these individuals.”
Haines confirmed shortly after his departure that he has joined the Payments Centre of Excellence (PCoE) of Barclays’ direct competitor, Santander UK, where as of this month, he has started his position as product owner.
He states that his objectives for his new role include “being digital with a human touch” under the overarching mission to “unlock potential, drive value and foster growth”.
“It’s about creating a new legacy of purpose-driven endeavour that delivers enduring experiences for our customers and value for our shareholders,” says Haines.
