John O’Beirne takes the reins as executive director of Square’s Europe operations
Former Bank of Ireland exec John O’Beirne has joined US fintech Square as executive director of its Europe operations.
O’Beirne will lead the growth and strategic direction of Square Europe from the firm’s office in Dublin, Ireland. He succeeds Jason Lalor, who served in the role for more than three years. Lalor left Square in February this year to join UK paytech Conferma Pay as its new CEO.
Confirming the news to FinTech Futures, Square says O’Beirne brings “decades of experience in banking, commerce and business” to his new role. He joins from Bank of Ireland, where he spent almost 20 years in various senior positions, most recently as its director of business banking. Prior to that, he served as CEO of its mortgage business for six years.
O’Beirne’s previous roles at the Irish banking giant include being the head of cards, payments and merchant acquiring; head of mortgage underwriting and restructuring; head of risk; and head of European property.
“Under John’s leadership, the Bank of Ireland occupied the number one position in the Irish commercial market and is renowned for market entry strategies, helping businesses of all sizes to accomplish growth targets,” Square says.
Commenting on his new role, O’Beirne says: “We have several projects underway already with the aim to provide growth opportunities for sellers of all sizes across all our European markets, which is critical in today’s trading environment.”
Square provides business management products and point-of-sale (POS) software tools for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to help them handle payments, sales, inventory and staffing.
