Visa hit by payment outages across Europe
Visa has reported that some card payments are currently failing across the UK and in Europe.
The firm is investigating the issue and the situation is very fluid.
The extent of the problem is unclear, but Visa customers across Europe have been complaining on Twitter that payments have been denied.
“We are investigating the cause and working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation,” Visa said at 4.56 pm (UK time) today (1 June).
Mastercard says its payment network is operating normally. “We are seeing nothing abnormal on our network right now,” a spokesperson explains.
In the UK, bank customers are still able to obtain cash from ATMs.
UPDATE 2 June 2018
At 4.42 am today (2 June), Visa issued another statement: “Visa has resolved a technical issue, which occurred earlier today in Europe and prevented some consumers from using Visa for payments. The issue was the result of a hardware failure in one of our European systems and is not associated with any unauthorised access or cyberattack.”
