MileagePlus Go Visa Prepaid Card Set to Soar?
Less than two months following the initial announcement from partners Netspend, a TSYS Company, and United Airlines, the prepaid industry’s first air miles rewards card is now available online at www.MileagePlusGO.com.
Cardholders earn one United MileagePlus award mile for every $1 spent on qualifying signature purchases, and award miles can be redeemed through United’s MileagePlus loyalty program, which is consistently voted the world’s Best Frequent Flyer Program by Global Traveler magazine.
The MileagePlus GO Visa Prepaid Card, issued by Republic Bank & Trust, carries an $85 annual fee that’s deducted from the first card load. Cardholders may earn up to 2,500 miles per month. PIN purchases and cash withdrawals do not qualify for rewards.
Thin margins have made robust rewards programs somewhat elusive for prepaid program managers, although Netspend offers merchant-funded rewards on its Pay Award-winning GPR and business programs. And Walmart and American Express each offer cash-back programs.
In a Pay Poll, 51 percent of Paybefore.com visitors who participated said they expect other prepaid providers to follow Netspend’s lead with mileage rewards, while 19 percent thought cash back would be a better reward and 13 percent predicted that miles won’t work for prepaid.
