Alipay comes to Greece via Viva Payments
Paytech firm Viva Payments is bringing Alipay to Greece. A strategic partnership between the two companies will see Alipay users “access the service for the first time” while visiting the country.
“The network of businesses operating with Viva Payments’ online payments platform, Viva Wallet, will channel Alipay transactions to several touristic locations throughout Greece,” Viva Payments explains.
Its CMO, Panos Tsakos, points out the “particular significance” of the partnership “as it signals Viva Payments’ universally-directed corporate mentality”.
This year, Greece is expecting more than 150,000 visitors from China, Tsakos adds, and the number is set to grow.
“It is necessary therefore, when dealing with this important touristic audience, to be able to facilitate their consumer habits.”
Viva Payments was set up in 2010 in Athens, Greece. It has offices in the UK and Belgium, and has been licensed by the Central Bank of Greece to provide services throughout the European Economic Area.
The company’s main product is the aforementioned Viva Wallet, a cloud-based payment solution for consumers and businesses.
Meanwhile, Alipay is already on its way to other European nations, such as Italy (brought by SIA and Unicredit), Spain (via BBVA), Austria and Switzerland (via Concardis), France and the UK (via BNP Paribas and Barclays, respectively).
